In 2021, we supported 3,916 families across our 12 Houses for an average of 16 nights.
Our families lived an average of 62 miles away from the hospital.
On average, families would have spent £1,240 in out-of-pocket accommodation costs.
Having a child in hospital is an experience that no parent chooses.
Our 12 Houses across the UK not only provide free ‘home away from home’ accommodation close to children’s hospitals, they also offer a friendly smile, clean facilities and an invaluable support network.
We’re not just a bed for the night.
Even though having your child in hospital never gets any easier, the pandemic has thrown our families an extraordinary curveball.
But we know how vital our services are, especially during trying times.
Our doors have remained open, supporting as many families as possible under government guidance.
During the first year of the pandemic, we were able to support 2,462 families. In a normal year, this can be up to as many as 6,000 families.
Our Houses provide:
An ensuite bedroom
Shared kitchens
Playroom/living areas
24/7 security
However, during the pandemic, they have also provided:
A place for one parent to relax whilst the other parent visits on the ward
Somewhere extended members of the family can visit parents without being in the hospital
A safe place they can bring their hospitalised child on a medical pass, so they can have some time out of the wards or finally meet their siblings
When Ella was born, her three big brothers were desperate to meet her, but because of Covid-19, they had to wait six gruelling months to finally get to hold their little sister. Luckily the family were staying at the local Ronald McDonald House so they could still stay together as a family during lockdown.
Did you know that all Ronald McDonald House rooms have a direct telephone line to their child’s ward?
