Our Vision

We’re embarking on our most ambitious refurbishment to date, so that Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey can continue to be there for families and patients of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

With your help, Liverpool’s ‘home away from home’ can be transformed for the families of tomorrow.

Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey has worked alongside Alder Hey Children’s Hospital since 1993, providing a vital ‘home away from home’ for families of patients throughout their treatment. We are incredibly proud of the work the team has achieved, and the support provided to thousands of families from across Merseyside, the UK and even across the globe. But due to the age of the facilities, staff and family feedback shows that the House requires major investments.

Mac House is regularly impacted by ongoing maintenance issues, some of which require invasive and costly repairs. These issues often disrupt families during their stay and provide ongoing difficulties to the dedicated team. The building services, equipment, furniture and décor are also tired and, in some cases, not fit for purpose, impacting the homely and calming environment that we strive to provide.

The challenge to transform

As the House has been extended over time, the current layout does not flow well, and provides accessibility problems in certain areas. Feedback also suggests that it currently does not provide enough well-rounded spaces to support the needs of all age groups, or to enhance our additional support services such as our Day Pass programme.

Our multimillion-pound transformation is essential to provide a state of the art ‘home away from home’ for families of patients at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. The remodelling will provide a new layout, new spaces, and modern décor and equipment that will enhance families’ experience and provide them with facilities to better support their well-being and make special memories together.

The transformation will include:

Entrance and reception

A relocated entrance and reception for improved access to the House for families using the adjacent apartments and enhanced operational management with additional office space for the team.

Kitchens

Introduce new additional kitchen space on each floor to provide better access across the building, with new high-quality equipment.

Ensuite Bedrooms

A complete refit of all bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms to provide modernised brighter space to relax, with additional space to allow for remote working. Some rooms will also offer a new interconnecting option for blended families, or to support step-down care.

Day Room

New and improved day room facilities with a fully functioning kitchen to enhance our Day pass programme and provide enriched spaces for the whole family to enjoy time together.

Garden

A larger re-landscaped garden with improved accessibility and new colourful spaces for families to relax and children to play.

Coffee Lounges

Brand-new coffee lounges throughout the building to act as versatile spaces that can provide opportunities to relax, connect with others, or have private medical or social care meetings.

Sustainability, Building Services & Infrastructure

An overhaul of the building services and infrastructure to ensure it is fully compliant with new legal and industry standards. This will include everything from piping and wiring, down to communications, windows and lighting and locking systems. Plans include more environmentally sustainable solutions for energy and water use.

This work is crucial for the future of Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey, and we need your help to transform the lives of families with children in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
